Building Up Self
Esteem at the High-School Prom
High
school is a "passage" to becoming an adult and part of that passage is
the development of one's self esteem and ability to adjust, interface
and be a part of the class. So many teenagers lose confidence and self
esteem due to not being capable of doing the things that their peers can
do or have the things that other parents can provide. After several
years of providing Christmas to a single mother and seven children,
through them I have seen how proud they were when given nice clothes; a
decent jacket, a pair or nice jeans; things that they really needed, yet
gave them a sense of pride.
I
decided, with the help of one of the high school teachers, choose a
couple of deserving teenagers that had no means to attend their Senior
prom, nor means to purchase the appropriate attire to make it a special
night. I met with them first to explain what their responsibility was in
"paying it forward". They were excited and starting talking about what
ideas they had to help someone else. I took them shopping for the Prom
and had a great time getting to know them and even better, finding out
what special people they were and how appreciative they were for the
assistance and attention. Abbie said to me as I was dropping her off at
her home after shopping, that she wanted so badly to go to the Prom, but
understood that her parents could not provide the means to make it
happen.
Saturday night, 29 March, dressed for a special night, two special
teenagers attended their Senior prom with the help of Paradigm
Technologies.
